It’s the Christmas season—one of my absolute favorite times of the year. For me, it’s always been a great time to slow down and really reflect on what God did through Jesus. Plus, I love the extra time with my family and all of the traditions we’re making. Really, everything about the Christmas season is even more fun now that Drenda and I are grandparents.
Of course, no two of us are the same, and we all like to celebrate the Christmas season in different ways. Maybe you’re the opposite of me and you enjoy a faster pace month of December, filled with parties, and activities, and events. Or maybe instead of carrying on old traditions, you enjoy doing something new and different every year.
No matter how each of us like to spend the Christmas season, there is one thing most all of us share more so at this time of year than any other, and that’s a desire to bless and care for those around us. It’s the time of year when we all tend to step it up a few notches in recognizing both our loved ones and our friends in need.
This Christmas season, we have an opportunity to give to and support those less fortunate.
Let me explain.
As I’m sure you are aware, weeks ago, Hurricane Maria battered the island of Puerto Rico for hours with 155-mile-per-hour winds and torrential rains, leaving complete devastation in its wake and the island declared a major disaster zone.
Clean up, reconstruction, and recovery efforts persist, but there’s still a long road ahead for much of the island.
After enduring months without electricity, running water, or communication services, families there are still continuing to struggle.
Our Team Revolution partners in the area and members of local churches have been supporting the community by handing out hot meals, praying with families, and doing all they can to encourage the electricians who have been working tirelessly to restore power to the island with very little means.
Together, we can do more.
This Christmas, you can help make a real difference in the lives of children and their families. You can help make it a great Christmas after all for these children whose lives were impacted by this disaster.
This Christmas season, you can help us make a direct and lasting impact on children and families in Puerto Rico who won’t have the basic necessities they need, let alone Christmas gifts to open.
Every child and family impacted by this devastation is different and has different needs. That’s why we’ve partnered with a local ministry in Puerto Rico to create these Christmas Care Packages.
Your best ministry gift of $20 or more this month can help provide the specific items these children and families in Puerto Rico need now—items that you and I may take for granted, like food, water, clothing, and personal care and hygiene items, as well as educational items and toys, to help make this Christmas special for them as well.
And, these well-thought-out gifts this Christmas season will also help share the goodness of God and His Kingdom.
You’ve heard me say before that just ONE experience with the Kingdom of God can completely change your life.
That one experience doesn’t have to be a huge experience; it can be as simple as having a need met—a need for personal care or hygiene items—or seeing the simple, sweet joy on your child’s face during Christmas when you weren’t sure how you would provide for them, let alone try make this season special.
It’s outreaches like this that draw people into the Kingdom of God.
Not only do we have the tremendous opportunity to help children and families and bring hope and encouragement this Christmas, but as you and I help show the goodness of God by meeting the needs of people, their hearts will be open to learn about His Kingdom and the principles that can truly change their entire lives.
Those are the type of stories we want to help create this Christmas.
You and I can help children and families have just ONE experience with God’s Kingdom this Christmas, but those experiences could potentially impact lives all around the world as the stories of the love of God are shared—as these children and families share how their Christmas was “awesome after all,” despite the hardships they faced.
Together, we can be light in this world and a reflection of God’s love and His Kingdom. Together, we can point people to THE absolute greatest story—that God sent His Son into the world to make things right for us—to rescue us all from darkness and have a relationship with us.
Every year at Christmastime, I read Isaiah 9 with my family. It’s one of my favorite chapters in the Bible.
These Scriptures are so powerful, and not just because they’re about the celebration of Jesus’ birth. These Scriptures tell us the story of an oppressed people, who were being held hostage by their enemy because of their sin. Nothing was working in their favor. Desperate, they had resorted to living in survival mode in caves in the mountains. They had no hope for their futures.
Then, God showed up; He used a man named Gideon to defeat their oppressors and to make things right despite the Israelites’ past mistakes.
The battle was finished, and an entire nation was set free.
The Bible says the birth of Jesus is like that day—a day of salvation and rejoicing—a day of hope.
This Christmas, you and I will we celebrate Jesus and the freedom He already provided as our Savior and Deliverer.
Together, we can take THE GREATEST STORY even farther this year, as we touch lives and help provide hope to children and families in Puerto Rico through this outreach this Christmas.
Don’t wait. Christmas is coming quickly.
