Stealing the Word from Your Heart—The Tactics of the Enemy
You have an enemy.
Satan knows that faith is the currency of the Kingdom of Heaven. He also knows that the living, active Word of God planted in your heart has the power to produce what it has promised.
So he uses tactics to come in and steal the Word of God from your heart.
In Matthew 13, Jesus told the Parable of the Sower, which talks about the conditions of the heart and how things come into our lives to choke the Word out of us.
One of the greatest battles I faced in holding onto the Word of God was many years ago when I was pregnant with our third child.
An exterminator had come in and sprayed for fleas brought in from a couple of Cocker Spaniel puppies we had gotten for our children. Within a short time of his leaving, I began to feel sick. Initially, I thought it was pregnancy-related, but I got sicker throughout the day, even hallucinating.
The next day, trying to figure out what had happened, we called the exterminator and discovered he had incorrectly sprayed chemicals to get rid of termites in our home instead of fleas.
Our unborn child had been exposed to the chemicals.
Battling Fear
I tried to keep fear out of my thoughts.
To battle, I wrote many Scriptures on paper and hung them on the ceiling of our bedroom. I would lie in bed and read them aloud.
One morning, I woke up and a particular Scripture seemed to jump off the ceiling at me.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit” – Proverbs 18:21
It was at that moment that I realized that I was bleeding and had symptoms of miscarriage.
I held tight to the words concerning life and death being in the power of my tongue.
My fight could only be with spiritual weapons.
By faith, I began to thank God that my child was fine and that it was well.
I had never been in a fight like that, and I was so glad that my heart had been prepared in God’s Word.
When fear tried to hold me captive and get me to hand over my child’s life, faith was there to answer.
Over the next two days, I bled as if having a miscarriage, but I continued to say the words, “My child shall live and not die and declare the works of God!”
Finally, the bleeding stopped, and I continued to full term.
Our son was born healthy and whole.
Fear is just one tactic the enemy will use to try to steal the Word of God from your heart.
Your enemy will use anything he can to get you to let go of the Word including trouble, the opinions of others, strife, conflict, even busyness.
You must stay on guard and hold onto the Word, never letting it out of your heart.
How to Hold on to the Word
1. Start by making sure you’re praying and reading God’s Word.
Set times that you will read your Bible and pray, but also pray throughout the day as you encounter life. Talk to God and do life with Him. He isn’t a 10-minute devotion. He’s a relationship partner who is with you all day.
2. Place scripture promises around your home and small scripture books in nooks and rooms that can speak into your spirit throughout the day.
3. Put biblical teachings on in your car and while you’re doing things around the house.
4. Go to church weekly.
Since we were designed to live out of our spirit, we need to make drawing life-giving nourishment from God and His Word a priority daily. This strengthens our mind (thought life), causes our will to align with God’s will, stabilizes our emotions, and helps bring life and health to our body as the temple of God.
