You Can Have Peace Despite the Pressure
You overslept and you’re running behind. You rush around the house yelling at your kids, and snapping at your wife. Then you get into traffic and find yourself slamming your fist on the steering wheel in frustration.
It’s been a long day at home with the kids and the laundry is piling up. When they start arguing for what seems like the hundredth time, you scream, “WHY CAN’T I HAVE JUST FIVE MINUTES OF PEACE?”
The world has taught us that having peace in our life is based on the circumstances around us, that we can’t have peace in our life as long as we have pressure.
But peace isn’t the absence of pressure.
Peace isn’t a feeling. Peace is a person.
In John 14:15, Jesus told the disciples that He would send the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, “My peace I give you.”
He meant the Holy Spirit.
If you’re a believer, you know Him. He lives in you.
If you spend your life looking for peace, you’ll find yourself compromising. A lot.
What you need to realize is that you already have peace IN you. No matter what the circumstances are in your life, you have the kind of peace Jesus did— the kind that lets you sleep in the boat while the storm is going on.
Getting that peace requires that you become familiar with the Spirit of God. That takes prayer. You have to know when to step forward, and when to step back. When you don’t know what to do, you need to pray in the Spirit. The answers won’t come by your strength or your wisdom; they will come by His.
When Israel was released from captivity in Babylon, their task was to rebuild Jerusalem. But they let people intimidate them—they let their circumstances affect their peace—then everything stopped. They didn’t build for 16 years. We read in Zechariah 4 that God said, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit.”
That was meant for you, too.
So, where’s your peace?
Are you rebuking the storms, or thanking God for your umbrella?
Wouldn’t you rather have a sunny day?
Umbrellas are great, but they can’t help you all the time. You have to tap into the peace and victory that’s only by the Spirit. Then, even when your circumstances seem crazy, when there are storms all around you, or when you’re in enemy territory, you’ll have peace.
